A
Bibliography of
American Sporting Books
by M.L. Biscotti
From its founding at the residence of
Theodore Roosevelt in 1887, one of the primary goals of the Boone and
Crockett Club has been to disseminate information about wilderness areas
and the wild game that inhabits those spaces. Through their own
publications, and very selectively through approved works of other
publishers, the Boone and Crockett Club has and continues to realize the
vision of its founders, here most recently with A Bibliography of
American Sporting Books by M. L. Biscotti.
We are very proud to say that this is only the sixth book so approved
during the entire one hundred and ten year history of the club. Sharing
its title with the pioneering work by John C. Phillips, also a Boone and
Crockett Club approved book, A Bibliography of American Sporting Books
continues the work of its predecessor in compiling all the important
sporting books published in America from 1926 to 1985. The focus is
clearly on birds and mammals with angling works appearing tangentially.
This is a work of great importance as now the reading sportsman as well
as researchers have an invaluable and essential resource.
Arranged alphabetically by author, the book is completely indexed by
title as well which facilitates easy and rapid use as a quick reference
and provides the framework for more leisurely investigation into general
subjects, authors and titles. The author is widely considered an
authority on the bibliographic aspects of sporting books and a more
thorough, accurate and complete examination of this subject is
unimaginable. This is the author’s magnum opus and we are thrilled to
be part of it. This book will be the standard reference for many years
to come.

Reviews
"For well over a half-century, the cornerstone of any serious
sporting library has been John C. Phillips' A Bibliography of American
Sporting Books. Now devoted bibliophile M.L. "Duke" Biscotti
has provided those of us who delight in fine sporting literature with a
long overdue update of Phillips' work under the same title. In essence,
it is the extension of Phillips covering the years 1926-1985, with its
focus being on hunting. No serious student of sport can afford to be
without this bibliographic tour de force"
- Dr. James Casada
"A Bibliography of
American Sporting Books 1926-1985 provides a comprehensive, well
organized and detailed listing of works in the fields during a period
that saw a dramatic increase in publishing activity. Taking its place
alongside Phillips, Biscotti should in coming years become a standard
reference for dealers, librarians and scholars.

A
Champagne Reception and Book Signing
On the evening of
November 18, 1997, Holland and Holland, the British gunmakers, hosted a
book-signing and reception at their magnificent and elegant American
store on 57th Street in New York City. The event was attended by
customers and friends of both Holland & Holland and Meadow Run Press
and was a resounding success. It was a most appropriate launch of one of
the most important sporting books of the twentieth century.
