The
Derrydale Prints
by John T. Ordeman
At long last, we now have a
complete, full-color catalogue raisonné of all the prints published by
Derrydale Press--from 1928 to 1948--there are 127 in all. These images
were executed by the most prominent and skilled sporting artists of the
20th Century, including William Schaldach, Roland Clark, Edward King,
and W. Goadby Lawrence. And they are quintessentially American
images--the compositions and subject matter are indisputedly part of our
collective mind's eye when we think of the convergence of art and sport.
This new oversized book
reproduces some of the more remarkable prints, and includes full
biographical sketches of the artists along with complete indexes of
prints, dimensions, and edition sizes. Also included is a discussion and
full explanation of the types of prints Eugene V. Connett produced:
drypoints, etchings, aquatints, gravures and stone lithographs. We have
provided some of our own prints for reproduction in this book, as have
some of our friends, including Sally Bockus, James Cummins, and Duke
Biscotti. This is an absolutely essential book for all the who cherish
the fine visual tradition of sport in America.
