Creating
The Garrison Fly Rod
A Film by Hoagy Carmichael
Now Available in VHS video
cassette - Approximately 40 minutes
This is in many ways the
inspiration and genesis of the now-classic book, A
Master's Guide to Building a Bamboo Fly Rod, by Everett Garrison and
Hoagy B. Carmichael. This film was shot by Mr. Carmichael five years or
so before the publication of the book and was produced in association
with the Angler's Club of New York (copyright 1973) and has not been
available for the past twenty years or so.
This entertaining film shows the legendary rod maker, Everett Garrison,
in his workshop making a bamboo fly rod from the first detailed step to
the completed rod. We hear Mr. Garrison discussing his craft with
colorful anecdotes and see him casting and fishing with a friend on the
fabled Neversink River. This is the only known film of any of the
classic rod makers.
This is a logical and essential adjunct to the Garrison/Carmichael book
that all rod making enthusiasts will thoroughly enjoy. It is a
fascinating record of Mr. Garrison's last years, the consummate
gentleman from another age.
