Megalops
An Angler's Affair with Tarpon

by Tosh Brown

From Key West to Belize to Venezuela, the author has passionately and unceasingly pursued this big-eyed behemoth of the Atlantic. As the young owner of a fledgling sporting travel business, Tosh had the good fortune of visiting some of the most productive tarpon waters of the world and fishing with some of the best guides in the business. This is his insightful and often humorous account of chasing the Silver King with a fly rod, along with some discussion of the storied history of the tarpon fishery along his native Texas coast, particularly the legendary tarpon destination, Port Aransas.

This new Meadow Run Press book is illustrated with a full-color section of the author's stunning photographs along with some never before seen photographs of some spectacular early tarpon fishing. Mixed throughout are some interesting observations on the difficulty in casting to and hooking and releasing tarpon - often as large as the angler - from a small outboard skiff. This book is a pure delight and a jewel in any saltwater fisherman's library.

Recent Reviews for Megalops

"It's a rare fishing book these days that leaves you wanting more, but Tosh Brown's Megalops fits the bill nicely...a lively and thoughtful homage to tarpon."   - Christopher Camuto - Gray's Sporting Journal

"As the subtitle suggests, this isn't a how-to book ... Brown weaves a combination of humor, whimsy, history, speculation and some genuinely great fish stories to capture the obsession with tarpon ... What makes Megalops shine is the writing. It has style and voice, rarities in the fishing book business."
- Art Scheck - Saltwater Fly Fishing

"Brown pours out the details of his passion for tarpon in this charming little book ... a book that's not only pleasing to read, but also pleasing to own."
Steve Raymond - Fly Fishing in Salt Waters

"There's tactical information in Megalops ... but (Brown) mostly remains bemused by various debates; his job isn't to offer answers, rather to share affection and sing hallelujah to the choir, to drop a few stories and laughter into the plate of collected lore."  - Seth Norman - Fly Rod & Reel

A Fine Time in Key West - May 26, 2001!
Many thanks to Jeffrey Cardenas for hosting a great evening of book signing, tackle shopping and fish stories at his Saltwater Angler Fly Shop in Key West. There were lots of tarpon fishermen in town and Jeffrey put on a fabulous evening for all in attendance. And, as you might guess, Tosh got in a little fishing as well during his stay.

Austin Angler Book Signing - June 12, 2001
Larry Sunderland put on a fine party at his Austin Angler Fly Shop on June 12th. There was a great turnout of friends and anglers who enjoyed some great food, fine wine, books, tackle and Tosh's tarpon slideshow presentation as well. Many thanks to Larry, Joey, Alvin and Ambrose from the Angler, and also La Traviata restaurant for their fine catering.
