Thanatopfish
by Stephen Sloan
Original art by James Prosek
Titled after the iconic
American poem, "Thanatopsis", by William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878), the
author sets out on a most unusual tour of the earth's great oceans and
fishing grounds visiting and examining the state of the world's
fisheries. Sloan has fished these waters over a lifetime of expert
angling, from Henryville, Pennsylvania, with its plump, native trout, to
the west coast of Africa billfishing aboard his Rybovich, the Nan-Sea.
This is a narrative tour de force and a book you will never forget.

Thanatopfish is not
just another how-to, where-to, or even why-to fishing book. In this
imaginative and fictional (but all too sadly true) story of his own
afterlife, Stephen Sloan has crafted a love letter to oceans and their
fish, a sober reckoning of waste and destruction, a sobering look at the
future, and, maybe, a promise of hope. Only a master angler could have
written Thanatopfish; only another angler can fully appreciate this
little book's beauty and sorrow... -
